All about our mega vacation
One of the top tourist attractions in Southeast Asia is Ha Long bay. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site, famous for its enormous limestone cliffs and beautiful blue water. The fame, however, has a down side: this Vietnamese bay is filled with cruises, backpacker party boats, and even worse, tons of plastic. So on the one hand, we really wanted to see this paradise and on the other, we hated the thought of sailing in, and adding to, the plastic soup.
Many travelers flee Thailands capital quickly after they have experienced the city’s heat, crowds, smells and chaos. Not us though, we actually love hectic Bangkok so much that we return to the city quite frequently.
The beautiful temples, immense skyscrapers, intense markets, tasty streetfood, hypermodern shopping malls and diverse nightlife are all a very good reason to visit Bangkok. But that is not why we have been there four times and even spent most of our honeymoon in the city. It’s because of our lovely friends that really make us feel at home everytime we visit.

Today was my grandfathers funeral. My family gave him a worthy and beautiful send-off. And I wasn’t there in person but in video call.
I don’t think my grandfather particularly missed me at the event but nontheless, it feels a bit weird. I miss something about not being home right now, even though it was my own decision. I miss the sharing of stories.

For some reason I dislike the sea. And by extension, I was not a very big fan of islands. In all honesty: I’m scared of waves, afraid of currents and sea urchins haunt my dreams. Oh, and the fact that I can manage to get a sun burn in the shade doesn’t help either.

We’re back! And by back I mean back on the road. Since the first of july we are continuing our travels but this time in Asia. We started in Malaysia and in a week time we’ve already walked the skybridge of the Petronas towers and have seen glowing mushrooms in the jungle.

If you ask people what traveling is all about, you will get a different answer every time. Soul searching, immersing yourself in other cultures, creating memories, leaving your comfortzone, sampling new cuisines, learning to be on your own, staying within budget, you name it. Everybody has a different reason for packing their bags and going on an adventure.
Sometimes you plan ahead a little. We mostly do this to make the most of our time here, to be efficient, so to say. At times this means that we book hotels or buses for the next step and save time. At other times, this means that we book hotels or buses for the next step and really regret leaving a place a little too soon.
After months of going with the flow, deciding about the next destination on the spot and making as well as changing plans in an instant, it was time for a new chapter. The one planned part of our big trip: A visit from the Adventurous Aunt (A.A.) and the Marvelous Mother (in law) (M.M).
We took a nightbus to Huaraz with only one goal in mind: going on the 4 day Santa Cruz trek. Having read great stories about this hike in the Cordillera Blanca, we were really looking forward to being out in the mountains for four days. But no matter how well you prepare, sometimes things just don’t go as planned.
